چکیده

A theory of transition free-electron laser ~FEL! driven by an electron bunch of finite longitudinal length is presented. It is shown that one can introduce concepts of a long, a short, and a very short bunch depending on the degree of correlation between the bunch effective length and the transition radiation formation length. It is obtained that a long Gaussian bunch produces an electromagnetic pulse with a double-exponent-type envelope exp@exp(2t)#, whereas in the short bunch case the latter has an oscillating nature. Both analytic and numerical studies show that the long bunch compression into the short one improves the bunch-field coupling and results in the enhancement of the logarithm of a gain at the pulse center by nearly one order. The further bunch compression leads to the gain vanishing. It is noted that a similar picture is probably possible for an undulator FEL. The results are generalized for a bunch train. @S1063-651X~99!06103-6#

Mode locking in a free-electron laser amplifier.

A technique is proposed to generate attosecond pulse trains of radiation from a free-electron laser amplifier. The optics-free technique synthesizes a comb of longitudinal modes by applying a series of spatiotemporal shifts between the copropagating radiation and electron bunch in the free-electron laser. The modes may be phase locked by modulating the electron beam energy at the mode spacing f...

Two-colour free electron laser with wide frequency separation using a single monoenergetic electron beam

Studies of a broad bandwidth, two-colour free electron laser (FEL) amplifier using one monoenergetic electron beam are presented. The two-colour FEL interaction is achieved using a series of undulator modules alternately tuned to two well-separated resonant frequencies. Using the broad bandwidth FEL simulation code Puffin, the electron beam is shown to bunch strongly and simultaneously at the t...

Fully coherent x-ray pulses from a regenerative-amplifier free-electron laser.

We propose and analyze a regenerative-amplifier free-electron laser (FEL) to produce fully coherent, hard x-ray pulses. The method makes use of narrow-bandwidth Bragg crystals to form an x-ray feedback loop around a relatively short undulator. Self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) from the leading electron bunch in a bunch train is spectrally filtered by the Bragg reflectors and is brought...

Proposed dielectric-based microstructure laser-driven undulator

We describe a proposed all-dielectric laser-driven undulator for the generation of coherent short wavelengths and explore the required electron beam parameters for its operation. The key concept for this laser-driven undulator is its ability to provide phase synchronicity between the deflection force from the laser and the electron beam for a distance that is much greater than the laser wavelen...

Optical deflection and temporal characterization of an ultrafast laser-produced electron beam.

The interaction of a laser-produced electron beam with an ultraintense laser pulse in free space is studied. We show that the optical pulse with a(0)=0.5 imparts momentum to the electron beam, causing it to deflect along the laser propagation direction. The observed 3-degree angular deflection is found to be independent of polarization and in good agreement with a theoretical model for the inte...
